  1. In what ways do you observe or celebrate important past events in your life? Why do you think it is important to remember the past?

Explore it:

  1. Read verses 1-6. What event were the people anticipating? (1) What was the plan of the chief priests and teachers of the law? What motivated Judas to approach the religious leaders? (3) What did Judas and the religious leaders discuss? (4) What did Judas get in return for betraying Jesus? (5-6)

  2. Read verses 7-13. What was significant about the day of Unleavened Bread? What instructions did Jesus give to Peter and John? Why was the place kept secret? How did Peter and John prepare for the Passover?

  3. Read verses 14-16. Why did Jesus eagerly desire to eat the Passover with his disciples? What did Jesus mean when he said,” I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God” (16)

  4. Read verses 17-20. What did Jesus instruct his disciples to do in remembrance of him? How is Jesus like the Passover Lamb? (Ex. 12:12-13; Jn. 1:29; 1 Co. 5:7b) What does the broken bread symbolize? (Jn. 6:35; 2 Pe. 1:4b) What does the cup represent? (20; Lev. 17:11; Heb. 9:14, 22; Mk. 10:45) What is the new covenant in Jesus’ blood? (Jer. 31:31-34)

  5. Read verses 21-23. What sad and shocking prophecy did Jesus make? (21) What was the disciples’ response? (23) What does this show about them?
